Ryan Singer: Comedy Wonder Town

4 stars (out of 5)

Ryan Singer has one of those life perspectives that still allow adults to propose hypothetical inquisitions like a child on a long car ride. This accounts to a fascinating line of “Luxury” thinking, meaning Singer ponders all of the marvelous implications of human technology while acknowledging his scientific contribution to be exactly zero. This likable modesty exemplifies Singer’s attitude towards a big world he claims to have a very small place in, but he understands more than he lets on about living with nano-technological feats of civilization…it seems his humble position of “luxury” lets him get a good look at the absurdity of it all. “Rodin needs to update the thinking man to just be staring at his f-ing phone,” he declares.

Singer gives a disclaimer early on in Comedy Wonder Town essentially saying his set contains lofty ruminations that may be confusing and alienating, but assures the audience there will be enough dick jokes to anchor the experience in a mutual reality. Well his bits don’t seem to be confusing or meandering at all, but simply insightful and refreshing with a spirit of marvel and exploration. He meets his promised immature topic quota by infusing tales of date-night with dad to replace his mom, and a final track that details a girlfriend from an intriguing, vulgarly titled planet in the “Finger Bang Galaxy” which summarizes a whole different type of exploration entirely.

Over all the listener experiences rather balanced servings of dick-joke-with-imaginative hypothetical twist and the more cerebral postulations we were cautioned about, which are mostly joyous witticisms regarding the legacy of the man who invented the alphabet and other such things that have a refreshing non-relevance to 2012.
